Re: LMA's
Our services does not use LMA's. We have had discussions about whether to
carrying them. However, our surgery department does and the
anesthesiologists has shown us how to use them. They use LMA's frequently
on select cases in the OR. Seems to be a very easy way to obtain airway
access when other means can not be achieved such as in suspected spinal
injury, unable to visualize the cords, or you are not able to properly
position the patient for oral intubation. Last evening I attended a local
ATLS course. The physician giving the airway lecture stated that an LMA is
not a definitive airway device and other means of obtaining an airway such
as oral or nasal intubation or lastly cricothyrotomy is preferred. He said
that aspiration can occur around the LMA. You might want to check with your
surgery department on this. I would think that during transport or for
short periods of time LMA's would be ideal and effective especially with a
difficult airway patient. Still run the risk of aspiration, but after all,
we run the risk using other methods too.
