RE: any statistics available? (fwd)

Dr. Ira Blumen has done a recent study covering EMS accident rates and risks
over the last several years. He will be publishing something for industry
consumption in the very near future. Ms. Hart from NASA also has some good
data and it may be available on the NASA web site.

Richard Frazier also published some of his research in June 2001 Air Med.
The NTSB searchable database may provide some insight as well.

NEMSPA also conducted a survey of EMS line pilots seeking their views on
safety issues in the industry. A "Reader's Digest" version of the results
is available at:

HAI also maintains a database of accidents for members at:

Flight Safety also has published information and studied aircraft accidents
and recently published a study of EMS accidents:

What we found from investigating these accidents on the root causes
committee from the EMS Safety Summit is that data is not easily collected
and not necessarily very accurate in determining real and underlying causes.
Until recent years, it was difficult to determine if a flight was on an EMS
mission because it may not have been recorded as such if no patient was on
board. If you would like my take on the potential for future accidents, I
wrote a blurb in the Air Medical Journal Forum last month called the "Next
Accident"--it may be helpful to get someone's attention to safety matters:

In addition to the Air Medical Journal article, Sandra Hart from NASA has
presented some outstanding information on that topic at AMTC. Someone else
on this group might know how to get hold of her.
