I also agree with Mr. Reesor. The sample is flawed and I
think we all knew before he did the study that the ED is a dirty
place..... He should have instead found out where the organisms are coming
from. Are the gurneys clean? Sinks clean? Laundry clean etc.
etc.
I think we have to do the best we can at aseptic technique but
the nature of our business is dirty and will continue to be. How about the
scene call where I landed in a pasture of manure, first step out of the aircraft
and you land in..... (you guessed it) transported that patient and got another
flight to go to a liver transplant patient who was in rejection.
Again I am sure there is a compromise out there somewhere but
we can't decontaminate ourselves after every flight. Being aware of
aseptic practice, HAND WASHING, gloved hand washing etc go a long way and if you
are meticulous about this then you should minimize the risk to the
patient. After all the imunosupressed patient is at risk living in the
world.
