Lighting with car headlites as you described is not a bad option. There are nice small portable kits that have strobes and spikes that you can use to set up an LZ. Also you can use reflectors rather than lights in an emergency. Chemlites aren't too bad and there are little spike contraptions to make that easier.
Most important is marking any obstructions to the area and giving a good radio brief to the pilot before landing. Most vendors and some programs have LZ setup guides. You might try your vendor if you're with a program or the program that sends the helo if you're not. I have a good LZ setup guide on powerpoint on cd, if you want it - send me your mailing addse.
