Re: Flight Medic Salary
Bob,
Just a few hints from someone who spent the better part of 3 months doing the
same thing.
1) I would contact the folks at Mosby and they can give you the name of the
professional research firm that they use. Talk with Dawn Drennan at
Mosby. The firm is out of St Louis I believe and the last name of the guy was
Rau...maybe Bill. They collect the data and can provide you with very
specific details to your inquiry. He did for me, but it "cost" me. nothing
big, something like a nice box of cigars or something like that...I dont
recall the specific. He is happy to help...or was...(hope he is not unhappy
to help now!)
2) Absolutely compare apples to apples. You must compare the services that
are in an area that has the same demographics that your service operates in.
Median populations, number of flights, hospital based, privately owned,
vendor operated, consortium owned....you get the hint. It doesnt do you any
good to compare a one helicopter operation in a small town in the midwest
with that of an 8 helicopter operation in a large east coast metropolitian
area. You have to take into consideration cost of living, regional economic
fluctuations etc.
3) Use your industry contacts and personal relationships with those in other
organizations like your own to attain additional information. BUT, you need
to make sure that you can get the information from a reliable source and that
it can be verified and backed up. just collecting a list of services and
saying "XYZ gets this wage, and PDQ gets this" isnt going to help drive your
point home. Get it on letter head if you can. You can also contact the NFPA
for some help as those folks have ties all over and are globally committed to
developing the flight paramedic profession...if it helps you get more
financial support for your position, then that just gives others the
ammunition to go to their programs to lobby for the same.
Hope this has helped, if you have any additional questions feel free to hit
me up back channel.
GOOD LUCK!
