RE: DNR in the Field

Ooops. I should have added that the statement regarding counseling and
acceptance would be signed by all parties.

Interestingly enough, this subject was just discussed in the last few days
at state quarterly EMS meetings in Florida. The proposal is to add to the
current Florida DNRO form a statement that the patient (and/or guardian)
*and* the family have received counseling regarding their options and that
all agree to abide by the decision. Of course, there will always be those
relatives called in for their "last goodbyes" that could throw a monkey
wrench in the works, but how to address that situation will have to be
discussed as well.

As to what to do when this situation occurs now, I agree with previous
comments that the patient should be worked. For Pinellas County EMS,we
require medical control contact to assist in the decision making process; I
have, on occasion, been successful in changing the minds of dissenting
family members when they learn the "magic MD's" recommendations.
