The first flight nurse (was Re: Nursing history)
Just a little flight nurse trivia I came across - I have found what I
believe is the first published report regarding flight nursing. It was an
article written in AJN in the early 20's. The story is about the use of
converted WWI Jenny biplanes in Ardmore OK and a local hospital sending
nurses out to transfer patients back. One can only imagine these early
flight nurses flying around with the patient "stuffed" in the fuselage. Are
there any Oklahoma flight nurses on the list that could give me further
information, pictures on the Ardmore flight team?
Hardy, W. (1923). The Ardmore ambulance plane. American
Journal of Nursing, 23, 182-183.
If anyone is interested, I have a fairly extensive bibliography of early
flight nurse articles and air ambulance development. I am trying to get a
paper out the door this summer as well.
Thanks, John
