Re: duty time/length of shift



Todd, I would have to agree with your program director on this one. Seven 12 
hour shifts in a row would in all likelyhood lead to increased fatigue for 
all of your staff. This job can be challenging enough, it is even more so 
after working that many shifts in a row.
I know there are studies out there relating to fatigue, I'm sorry I just 
couldn't locate them right now. You might check the AirMed bibliography's. 
Also look on Medline for any studies.
Our program utilizes 12 and 24 hour shifts but not on a set schedule 
pattern. But if we work a 24 hour shift we have to have the following day 
off. Or, we will work three 12's one week and then a 12 & 24 hour shift the 
following week.
