Re: Vent ?

Dear Kyle,

Here are my two cents:

In my opinion, the Impact Uni-Vent 754 is suitable for pediatric patients
WITH healthy lungs, and the adult patient population only.

To volume ventilate any pediatric patient with poor lung compliance or any
other pulmonary disease state is quite risky and typically ineffective. This
population and CERTAINLY the neonatal population, should be ventilated with
a pressure regulated ventilator. There are many on the market and most are
found built into transport isolettes, which I might add, in my opinion, are
paramount to the safe and optimal transport of the neonate, simply from a
thermal regulation standpoint.

If a transport isolette or pressure regulated ventilator is not feasible to
your program, (say you do a small volume of neonates), then I personally
feel an "anesthesia bag" with a manometer in the hands of a skilled user is
optimal to any volume ventilator. As far as thermal regulation goes, porta
warmers and "space blankets" can suffice if transport times are short.

Best regards,

P.R. Adams
