Chuck, yes I agree that APRS can be used in a variety of settings other than
ham radio, hence the intended study. Regarding you comment that APRS is a
connectionless system, well traditional voice com, pagers, and cell phones
are also connectionless ;-)
Are you doing anything digital at Pegasus?

While the data portion of the packet is limited to 255 characters, using
compression and coding you can squeeze quite a bit of data into a packet.
The downside to APRS is the fact that it is a connectionless system, there
is
no guaranty that your data made it to where it was intended.
