Re: what kind of transport-ventilator do u use?

We are just now starting to use a Pulmonetics PLT-1000 transport vent.
Fairly small, very capable. I'm not an RCP type, but they have some machines
up in the RT department where they tested the Univent, Crossvent, Bird Avian
(our current vent), this Pulmonetics thing, and several others throughout
the range of their capabilities (volume, pressure, flow rate, SIMV, Assist
control, etc etc.) According to the head of the department, who just did the
testing and presented all of them to us, in many cases these vents don't
deliver what the gauges are saying. In the case of the Crossvent, SIMV
isn't really SIMV, it's Assist control. The Univent doesn't deliver the
volumes it is set at. The Bird isn't capable of doing pressure-mode
accurately. At any rate they selected the Pulmonetics as the best of the lot
as far as delivering the promised performance. In-hospital patient trials
showed that less-sedated patients appeared to tolerate it better than the
others as well.

Again my disclaimer: I don't know one vent from another too well (except for
the Bird, which is not my personal favorite vent); I'm just passing along
the recently divulged wisdom of our RT department.

I'll pass on our experience with the Pulmonetics some time in the future; it
just came aboard Tuesday.
