Two young men
Two young men, one a teen and one almost, were informed that their father had
just been killed. His job had been to fly a helicopter to bring skilled
medical care to the ill and injured and then fly them to the warmth and
healing of the hospital. His was an awesome responsibility, one the boys
probably couldn't entirely understand, but they knew their father played a
role in helping others when very few were able or willing. In anyones' eyes,
their father was a modern day hero.
Yet, despite all the father's exploits at the controls of his aircraft, his
boys were his main mission. Whenever not flying or dealing with the myriad
details of being an EMS pilot on the ground, he could be found practicing new
recipes as a bachelor father, shooting hoops with his sons, or teaching them
reverence in their church.
So when brought to a quiet place and told that their father had died while at
the controls of his helicopter, not knowing that he had been alone in the
crash, their only questions were, "What about the nurse? What about the
flight medic? Was the patient OK?" The selflessness of their father had
been passed on.
Such is the measure of a man who sought only to do right by his sons and
serve others.
Robert Green, EMS Pilot, will live on.
