FW: followups
Dr. Abernethy:
I'm happy that you've clarified some of your original points. It's quite
clear that you've been frustrated by this issue. As an EMS and flight
program medical director myself, I share your strong feeling that these
patients become *my* patients while under my service's care, and that we
should therefore have the same access to further information about our
patients that a primary care practitioner would have from a specialist or a
hospitalist. Perhaps the key in the future may lie in physician to physician
contact in this context, with the ability to convey information to
individual EMS practitioners via a well defined quality management process.
The trauma nurse coordinator at our trauma center is working on just such a
system with one of our local county's EMS medical director's office. I'll
see what comments she might have to share with the list.
