re: FLIGHTS VS TRANSPORTS
I'm in agreement. Just because a program does not perform mulitudes of "flight", does not mean they are slack in job performance. Many crews spend time in ED's or in house keeping skills honed to razor sharpness and learning new skills and techniques.
And, Dr JO never seemed to relate that a program that has 500 "flights" per year, may be utilizing one aircraft, where a program that has 2000 "flights" per year may be utilizing 5 aircraft... thus the program with the higher numbers is actually doing less flights per aircraft spread out over that many more employees. So is the skill level any different? It sounds as if JO has gotten into a "sand kicking" contest over numbers and is bringing it into this arena.
Just my $.02 worth..

<< Hmmm....This seems like a rather touchy subject. I'm
certainly not trying to add more fuel to the fire. We
are currently looking at staffing patterns in our
program. A lot of people seem to think numbers are
the only important factor in the equation. We may not
do the same "number" of flights as other
agencies...but our flights average a minimum of five
hours round trip. That makes a big difference in
staffing patterns....Just something I think is another
important aspect to consider when talking about how
"busy" a service is.
One other important point I would like to make. I
have always felt that doesn't matter what the size of
the program is. Regardless of whether you do 200
flights per year or 5000 flights per year, a smaller
program should be the same calliber and skill level as
a larger program. I am constantly striving to keep
our program and staff at the highest performance level
possible. Even though we are one of those smaller
programs, doing fewer flights, I believe we have an
excellent program and everyone involved works hard to
make it that way.
