Re: FLIGHTS VS "TRANSPORTS"
Hmmmm....
I do agree that the trauma center that does the most traumas, would be better
at it. But most flight programs don't JUST do traumas, or cardiacs, or
pediatrics. Most programs have to be highly trained in numerous areas of
expertise. Now....How do we get expertise? I would agree with you that
numbers ='s experience.
Granted that a large percentage of ground trips are pretty unremarkable.
However, there is a lesson to be gained from every transport (ground or air).
And some of the ground trips require intense critical care thinking, as well
as a "street sense" in prioritizing / flexible thinking / appropriate
communication.
So does a 100% flight oriented program offer the best care? Does a flight
program in general offer the best care? I truly think that the care given to
the pt is a reflection on the experience that the nurse/paramedic/MD/RT has
to offer.
So, to answer your question about who I would want to take care of my family
members. Hmmm...it's kinda hard to say. I would want the best care. But I
would hate for a "trauma God" swooping down to pick up my Mom and not know
anything about cardiac or other medical problems.
I don't think that such a rigid idea will work in such a continuously
changing environment that we work in and would rather spend my time trying to
improve worthwhile projects.
Be safe all,
Sean
