RE: CAMTS

I believe most states would like nothing more than to be able to
off-load the approval process for air medical programs to a
third-party accreditation agency such as CAMTS. However, it's
seldom a clean process for a couple of reasons and I've heard
both anti-trust and Federal pre-emption issues raised as well
as restraint of trade as reasons why it might not work well.
In one scenario in which I was involved, the original intent was
to require CAMTS accreditation but that was later diluted to a
requirement that programs be able to show evidence of intent to become
CAMTS accredited. Based, of course, on protests by non-accredited
programs.
The first part of your question is whether states are moving in this
direction and my impression is that some are. The larger question is
whether such a requirement can withstand a legal challenge and on
that I have no data to suggest one way or another other than the case
I mentioned above.
